What is a dynamic QR code?
A dynamic QR code is a QR code that contains a short redirect link, such as cdk.co/r/8F2K, rather than the final content. The redirect sends each scan to a destination you can change, and records that the scan happened.
To a person scanning it, a dynamic code looks and behaves like any other QR code. The phone camera reads the link, the browser opens it, and within a fraction of a second the redirect forwards them to your page. The difference is entirely on your side: you control what the link points to.
What sits behind the code
- The pattern encodes only the short link. It never changes.
- The redirect is a record in your CardDeck account that maps the short link to a destination.
- The destination is whatever you choose: a URL, your digital business card, a PDF or a menu page.
- The scan log counts each visit with its date, device type and approximate region.
Why the short link matters
QR codes get denser as you add data. A long URL with tracking parameters can push a code to a higher version with many small modules, which needs a larger print size to scan reliably. A dynamic code always stores the same short link, so the pattern stays simple no matter how long the real destination is.
What is the difference between static and dynamic QR codes?
A static QR code stores the content directly and can never change; a dynamic QR code stores a short link that you can re-target and track. Both are read by the same phone cameras.
Side by side
- Editing. Static: impossible after printing. Dynamic: change the destination at any time.
- Tracking. Static: none. Dynamic: scan counts, dates, devices and approximate region.
- Code complexity. Static: grows with the amount of data. Dynamic: stays small because the link is short.
- Dependency. Static: none; it works forever. Dynamic: needs the redirect to stay active on your plan.
- Offline content. Static: plain text, WiFi and vCard work with no internet. Dynamic: needs a connection to follow the link.
Which types must stay static
Some QR types only work as static codes, because the phone reads the payload itself instead of opening a web page:
- WiFi network codes. The phone needs the network name and password in the code.
- Plain text. There is no page to redirect to.
- Offline vCards. If you want a contact saved with no connection, the vCard must be in the code.
For people, a good middle ground is a dynamic code that opens a digital card with a save-to-contacts button. It stays editable and still saves a vCard to the phone. The QR code generator lets you choose static or dynamic for each code, and our guide to static vs dynamic QR codes goes further.
When should you use a dynamic QR code?
Use a dynamic QR code on anything that is expensive, slow or impossible to reprint, and anywhere you want to know whether the code is actually being used. Use a static code for permanent, unchanging content.
Good fits
- Signage and window graphics. A sign might stay up for years; the page behind it will not.
- Product packaging. Point to a manual, a recipe or a promotion, and change it between print runs.
- Business cards and badges. Change jobs or numbers without throwing cards away. See the QR code business card.
- Real estate signs. Re-point the same sign to the next listing.
- Brochures and menus. Swap the PDF behind the code when prices change.
- Campaigns. Compare two flyers or two event booths by giving each its own code.
- Vehicle livery. Wrapping a van is expensive; editing a link is free.
Less useful
- One-off slides or screens where you can simply change the code.
- WiFi logins, which must be static.
- Content you never want to depend on an account, such as an emergency information sheet. A static code is safest there.
A practical test
Ask two questions. Could the destination change while this print is still in use? Would scan numbers change any decision you make? If either answer is yes, use a dynamic code.
How do I create a dynamic QR code?
Sign in to CardDeck, create a new code, choose "Dynamic", enter the destination, style it and download. The code is live immediately, and you can edit the destination from your dashboard at any time.
Step by step
- Create a code and choose the dynamic option.
- Pick the destination. Select one of your CardDeck cards or profiles, or paste any URL, including a link to a PDF or a menu page.
- Name it. Use a name that tells you where it is printed, such as "Spring flyer, shop window". This makes analytics easy to read later.
- Style it. Add your colors and logo. CardDeck checks contrast and logo size.
- Download SVG for print or PNG for screens.
- Test the print on two phones at the real distance.
Editing later
Open the code in your dashboard and change the destination. The next scan goes to the new page. You can also:
- Schedule a change for a date, for example switching from a pre-launch page to the launch page.
- Pause a code, or redirect it to a holding page, while content is being updated.
Making many at once
If you need a code per shop, per product or per salesperson, use the bulk QR code generator to create them from a spreadsheet. Dynamic codes created in bulk count toward your plan's allowance.
What can you track with dynamic QR code analytics?
CardDeck dynamic QR code analytics show how many times each code is scanned, on which dates, from which device types and from roughly which region. Data is aggregated; no personal information is collected unless the visitor chooses to share it.
What you see per code
- Total and daily scans, so you can see spikes after an event or a mailing.
- Device type, such as iPhone or Android.
- Approximate region, derived at a coarse level, not a precise location.
- Trends over time, to spot codes that stopped being used.
What you can do with it
- Compare placements. Give the window poster and the counter card separate codes and see which drives more scans.
- Judge events. Put a different code on each booth or badge type and compare the numbers afterwards.
- Time follow-up. A rise in scans after a demo day tells you when to follow up.
- Retire dead codes. If a code gets no scans for months, the print may have been removed or damaged.
Plans and export
Basic analytics with CSV export come with Pro. Team adds team analytics, an admin dashboard and CRM export. Business adds advanced analytics with export. Read more about scan and card analytics.
Privacy
Scan counts are not people. One person scanning twice counts twice. If you need to know who someone is, pair the code with a digital card that offers an optional contact exchange form, where the visitor decides what to share.
Are dynamic QR codes reliable, and what happens if you cancel?
Dynamic QR codes are reliable as long as the redirect stays active, which is why you should choose a provider that is clear about what happens to codes when plans change. CardDeck shows you which codes are affected before any change, and never silently breaks a code.
How the redirect stays fast
Redirects are served from a global network, so the extra hop adds very little time to a scan. The destination page's own loading speed matters far more; test it on mobile data.
Plan limits
- Free: 2 dynamic QR codes.
- Pro: 50.
- Team: 200.
- Business: unlimited.
Static QR codes and barcodes are unlimited on every plan and never depend on your subscription.
Downgrading or cancelling
If you move to a plan with fewer dynamic codes than you have active, CardDeck lists the codes that exceed the new limit and lets you choose which stay active before anything changes. Plan ahead for long-lived print:
- Keep codes on permanent print (signage, packaging) within your plan's allowance.
- Use static codes for content that must work with no account at all.
- On Business, a custom domain lets your short links use your own domain.
Security
Because you control the destination, a dynamic code cannot be quietly changed by anyone outside your workspace. On Team and Business plans, codes live in a shared workspace that admins manage. Always keep your account secure with a strong password.
How much does a dynamic QR code generator cost?
CardDeck includes 2 dynamic QR codes free, 50 on Pro ($8/month, or $6/month billed yearly), 200 on Team ($6 per seat/month, or $5 billed yearly, minimum 3 seats) and unlimited on Business (from $199/month, or $149 billed yearly). There is no extra per-scan charge.
Choosing a plan
- One person with a card and a few campaigns: Free or Pro.
- A shop or agency with several locations, signs and flyers: Pro or Team.
- A team where each person has a card and the business runs campaigns: Team.
- Large estates of signage, packaging or events, or a need for a custom domain, SSO or API: Business.
What else comes with each plan
Pro adds 5 digital cards, basic analytics with CSV export and removes the CardDeck badge. Team adds locked brand templates, employee ID cards and team analytics. Business adds multiple brands and workspaces, advanced analytics, SSO, custom domain, API and priority support.
